Electron Lenses for Compensation of Beam-beam Effects: Tevatrotron, Rhic, Lhc

چکیده

Since previous BEAM’06 workshop a year ago, significant progress has been made in the field of beambeam compensation (BBC) – it has been experimentally demonstrated that both Tevatron Electron Lenses (TEL) significantly improve proton and luminosity lifetimes in high-luminosity stores. This article summarizes these results and discusses prospects of the BBC in Tevatron, RHIC and LHC.

Long-range and head-on beam-beam compensation studies in RHIC with lessons for the LHC

Long-range as well as head-on beam-beam effects are expected to limit the LHC performance with design parameters. They are are also important consideration for the LHC upgrades. To mitigate long-range effects, current carrying wires parallel to the beam were proposed. Two such wires are installed in RHIC where they allow studying the effect of strong long-range beam-beam effects, as well as the...

Electron Lenses for Particle Collimation in Lhc

Electron Lenses built and installed in Tevatron have proven themselves as safe and very reliable instruments which can be effectively used in hadron collider operation for a number of applications, including compensation of beam-beam effects [1], DC beam removal from abort gaps [2], as a diagnostic tool. In this presentation we – following original proposal [3] – consider in more detail a possi...

Beam-Beam Compensation Schemes

Several techniques have been proposed for compensating the effects of the head-on or long-range beam-beam interaction. These include alternating crossing at several interaction points, electromagnetic wires, electron lenses, and superbunches. I discuss some prominent compensation schemes and their R&D status, with special emphasis on the LHC and its upgrade. 1 HISTORY AND PERSPECTIVE The beam-b...

Observation of Long-range Beam-beam Effect in Rhic and Plans for Compensation∗

At large distances the electromagnetic field of a wire is the same as the field produced by a bunch. Such a longrange beam-beam wire compensator was proposed for the LHC, and single beam tests with wire compensators were successfully done in the SPS. RHIC offers the possibility to test the compensation scheme with colliding beams. We report on measurements of beam losses as a function of transv...

US-LARP Progress on LHC IR Upgrades

We review the progress on LHC IR upgrades made by the US-LARP collaboration since the last CARE meeting in November 2004. We introduce a new optics design with doublet focusing, and discuss energy deposition calculations with an open mid-plane dipole. We present the results of a beam-beam experiment at RHIC. This experiment was the first phase of a planned test of the wire compensation principl...
